UNEXTINCT
- MANGOLIN CREATIVE -
A series of large-scale illuminated lantern sculptures created for UNEXTINCT, an immersive wildlife conservation experience produced by Mangolin Creative. Each lantern represents a continent and features intricately illustrated endangered species, their habitats, and conservation challenges. The artworks were transformed into laser-cut stainless steel installations, combining wildlife illustration, environmental storytelling, public art, and experiential design.
CONCEPT
I envisioned the five lanterns representing the five continents of our planet, each serving as a tribute to the endangered species native to those regions. Our goal was to showcase these species on their respective lanterns, ensuring that the designs not only highlight the diversity of life but also maintain an aesthetic harmony.
To achieve this, we carefully curated a list of endangered species from each continent, considering how they would integrate into the geometric structure of the lanterns. After exploring various possibilities, we finalized a selection that encompasses a wide range of fauna, including birds, mammals, reptiles, insects, and other terrestrial life forms. This approach allowed us to create a visually cohesive yet diverse representation of the species we aim to protect.
IDEATION
The concept behind the project was not only to showcase the beauty of each lamp alongside the corresponding species but also to convey a deeper story. My goal was to highlight the habitat and conservation efforts related to these species through the intricate designs within the lamps. I aimed to create an experience where people could spend time not just admiring the lanterns, but also understanding the narrative behind each species.
FABRICATION
One of the challenges was designing the lamps in a way that would facilitate the laser cutting and fabrication of the metal, which would form one of the faces of each lamp. Despite the complexity, I thoroughly enjoyed the process, especially since this was my first time working on something so unique. They’re crafted out of stainless steel and were cut to precision using the latest fiber laser cutters. I am so satisfied with the clean and precise fabrication work and I am extremely pleased with how these lamps turned out.
UNEXTINCT LIGHT SHOW
Our goal for this project was to create an experience that not only raises awareness but also instills hope. The lanterns, with their radiant light spreading outward, symbolize the possibility of saving these endangered species, offering visitors an inspiring and uplifting journey through the exhibition.
