Preserving Palk Bay: A Biodiversity Hotspot and Conservation Effort

Created as part of a conservation and education initiative supported by the Azim Premji Foundation’s Arts and Culture program, this illustration celebrates the extraordinary biodiversity of Palk Bay, a unique coastal ecosystem between India and Sri Lanka. The artwork highlights the interconnected relationship between marine wildlife, mangrove habitats, local fishing communities, and conservation efforts. Through visual storytelling, the project raises awareness about the ecological importance of this UNESCO Biosphere Reserve and the need to protect its fragile habitats for future generations.
Palk Bay, located along India’s southeastern coast between Sri Lanka and Tamil Nadu, is a true biodiversity hotspot, home to a wide variety of unique habitats and species. As one of India’s major fishing regions, Palk Bay also faces challenges from unregulated activities that threaten its fragile ecosystem. To help protect this rich environment, the Indian government has designated parts of the bay as a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve.
This project, supported by the Azim Premji Foundation’s Arts and Culture function, is part of a broader initiative for the university campus in Bangalore. I’m grateful to have been part of this meaningful work.
